Dear Drayton SS Community
Welcome back to the start of Term 3. I hope that everyone has had the chance to relax, refresh and get ready for another great term of learning.
Thank you for having your children here at school every day. Attending school every day (unless of course your child is ill) is a must. Children who attend school regularly are placed in a better position to be successful. Attendance matters.
Why Does School Attendance Matter?
Regular school attendance gives students a better chance at life. Students achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day because:
- they have increased access to learning opportunities
- they maintain friendships
- they stay connected to the curriculum progression
- they develop self-efficacy as a learner
- they have better long-term life outcomes.
Prep Vision Testing:
CARBAL Hearing will be conducting follow up vision screening for students in Prep on Wednesday 30 July.
Prep ‘come and look’ morning:
On Wednesday 30 July we begin our first Prep transition event for students who will be looking at enrolling at our school for Prep in 2026. The Prep ‘come and look’ morning runs from 10am-11am and is a great opportunity for prospective parents/carers and students to come and observe a morning in the life of prep and chat with our staff. We look forward to seeing you there.
Cobb and Co Museum Visit:
On Monday 4th August, 2025, all students from Prep to Year 6 will be attending an activity day at Cobb & Co Museum, called Have another look, Captain Cook.
The purpose of this activity day is to engage students in recognition and celebration of indigenous culture and perspectives, and to develop understanding and empathy of Australia’s Indigenous history. As this excursion is directly aligned with the Australian Curriculum: First Nations’ Perspectives Cross-curricular priority, it is expected all students attend.
Activity details: Have another look Captain Cook:
- Students will be involved in various activities, including a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, Indigenous Games, Boomerang and Spear Throwing, and Dreamtime Stories art activities.
- The program will be led by the staff at Cobb & Co Museum, with school staff supporting class groups through the activities.
- Students need to be at school by 8:30am, for roll making. The bus (Darling Downs Transport) will leave promptly at 8:50am from the front of the school, and will return to school before 3:00pm.
- All teaching staff will be attending, so there will be no supervision for students at school. If your child is not at school before the bus departs, you will need to make alternate arrangements to transport them to the Museum in Lindsay Street.
There is no cost for the excursion. Both the activity and transportation costs will be subsidised by the school.
Team Gym:
Team Gym is back this term beginning on Friday 1 August and running for 4 weeks until the 29 August for selected students in Years 4-6. It has been wonderful watching the teamwork, enthusiasm and joy these students have shown so far this year when practicing. I look forward to seeing how their performances progress as the term goes on.
Parent Teacher Conversations:
Parent Teacher conversations are scheduled for Tuesday 16 September. We look forward to discussing your child’s progress with you and how we can continue to help them to be successful.
Student Free Day:
A reminder that Friday 5 September is a student free day, and we look forward to seeing all our students back at school on Monday 8 September ready to learn. We hope all our families enjoy the long weekend.
Yours in education
Paul Wells
